Use Your Outer Space To Find Inner Tranquility!

by Mary B. Cool

Find inner peace and harmony by bringing order to your home and life. Your environment reflects the inner you. Chaos and clutter in your environment are mirrored in your mind. A disorganized jumbled home will weigh on your psyche and drag you down. Begin the journey to change your life and find tranquility with the simple steps outlined here. These are also the tenants of Feng Shui. Here are strategies for your public space, your private space and your storage.

The Public Spaces of a home are the areas which visitors see--The yard, the entry, the living room and the kitchen. This is your face to the world. If you are comfortable in your public space you will be more open to the universe. Energy and happiness should flow into you through these areas. Clutter and disorder will block this energy. Take charge of your Public Spaces with these steps:

1) Throw out the trash. Recycle all those old magazines and papers. Let them go. If you are holding onto a newspaper for a certain article... let it go. You can find the information on the Internet if you need it in the future.

2) Simplify your furniture. Exchange those mismatched shelving units for an entire wall of matching bookcases. Baskets can be used on the selves as drawer storage. Then those small mismatched dressers can also be eliminated.

3) Remove all accessories (every one). Place them in plastic those nifty plastic bins and store in either in an attic, basement or rented storage locker. After six weeks reintroduce them one piece at a time. Their absence will give you new prospective. You will see these items in a new way and only want to bring the really special items back. Clutter will be reduced dramatically.

4) Refresh your furniture with slip covers. Whether from Pottery Barn, LLBean, or Sure Fit Slipcovers this is a quick easy way to get a fresh new look.

5) Take your furniture makeover to a higher level with products like Furniture Falsies. Your furniture can then have a new silhouette. This is a great way to rejuvenate upholstered pieces.

6) Throw away all those half dead items...the hose with the "small leak", the no-longer-white lawn furniture and those "I'll-deal-with-it-later" items that sit around the yard.

The Private Spaces of a home are the areas which only intimate friends see-- bedrooms and bathrooms. These are areas where fantasy can reign. But to let imagination rule supreme the burdens of disorganized chaos need to be released.

1) Remove any piles of cloths that tend to grow in bedrooms. When closets are full or not easily accessed then other items become clothes racks.... chairs and exercise equipment suddenly become buried. Take the pledge....NO MORE PILES.

2) Keep hampers in convenient locations. Separate hampers for dry-cleaning, dark washables and light washables will simplify your laundry chores.

3) Freshen your private rooms with new bedding and towels.

4) Paint and wallpaper can revitalize a room and enable you to create the room of your dreams. This is a wonderful inexpensive way to make your fantasies come true. Want to sleep in a castle, by the beach, or in a Victorian boudoir? You can create your private fantasy with a little paint, paper and fabric.

The last area to conquer is storage. Retrieval is the most important factor in storage. Remember, you might as well just give it away if you are never going to be able to find it.

1) A storage locker is a great asset. It allows time and distance between you and the items you are having trouble parting with.

2) Place these long term storage items in clear plastic bins. Place a contents list on each container in a spot where it is visible when the containers are stacked.

3) Remove all clothing from your closet which has not been worn in 12 months. If you love an item and can not bear to part with it, then keep it in the storage locker.

4) When your "stuff" is reduced to your satisfaction, then asses the area where it is stored. The old saw of "A place for everything and everything in its place" is true true true. Any item which is important enough to keep must have a place to be stored. California Closets designs closets to fit your needs. They will evaluate your possessions and help you create a "space for everything."

It is hard to give up burdens when we have carried them for a long time. Have the courage to let them go and get rid of the chaos and clutter in your home. This is the path to peace and tranquility.
